Safe Sanctuary Reminder

As we move back to more and more in-person meetings, I thought it prudent to provide a continual reminder to please ensure that when you're attending Troop events, you're logging your attendance on our Safe Sanctuary log.

As part of our agreement with our Chartered Organization, Keller United Methodist Church, we maintain the strictest adherence to the BSA's Youth Protection Guidelines, but going a step further, we also ensure we are in compliance with Keller UMC's Safe Sanctuary policy.

Part of that is to keep track of the attendance of all adults at our events. This helps us know your active status as well as helps to maintain a record for ensuring Safe Sanctuary guidelines are met.

In the past, we kept a logbook for each person to have to sign into but we've automated this for you...

If you log in to our website from a mobile device, just beneath the red title header you should see a black triangle pointing down.  Press that to bring up a list of Pages from our site.  Scroll to the bottom and choose "Safe Sanctuary".  This will take you directly to the two-question form.

Additionally, if you're doing this from a desktop or choose the "Desktop view" from the webpage, there will be a blue icon like seen above) in the right-hand margin. Clicking that icon will take you to the form.

We appreciate your effort in helping ensure our records are accurate and that we maintain strict protocol enforcement for both YPT and SS guidelines.

Safe Sanctuary

ALL PARENTS, LEADERS AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS that attend Troop meetings – please make sure you sign in to the adult roster near the front door every single time you attend a Troop function. We need this to ensure Safe Sanctuary compliance.

To become Safe Sanctuary certified, you must have six months of continuous activity with the Troop (i.e. attend at least 1 meeting a month, then maintain this activity level in the future).

The roster allows us the ability to show the church that we are complying with their Safe Sanctuary policy, which again, is for the benefit and safety of our Scouts and that is our highest priority always!

We would like to encourage all parents to become Safe Sanctuary certified right HERE
*Please note there is a $15 fee for the background check.

Safe Sanctuary certification greatly benefits our Unit on Campouts, at Troop meetings and events, as well as Merit Badge Counseling, as required by our Charter (Keller UMC).

If you have any questions, please talk to Kathy Warren in the Committee Room at an upcoming Troop meeting.

Reminder - 30 days to renew Safe Sanctuary

At the same time that BSA is requiring all Scouters to take the new Youth Protection course in order to have a current YPT certification, our Chartering Organization, Keller United Methodist Church, is requiring all adults who work with youth to renew their Safe Sanctuary certification.

Adult leaders who are Safe Sanctuary certified will be receiving letters from Keller United Methodist Church concerning the upcoming global Safe Sanctuary renewal. As part of this renewal, all Safe Sanctuary volunteers will be required to do a new background check, and are being asked to pay the $15 fee to process the background check. The reason for this $15 fee is it is a blanket renewal, involving hundreds of volunteers at once, and the large cost is not in the church budget.

These renewals must be done before October 31, 2018, or the Safe Sanctuary volunteer will be taken off the roster and must start the entire process over, including references.

For those who are unaware of Safe Sanctuary, this is another level of youth protection that is required of our Troop by our Charter Organization. As a reminder, we must comply with Keller UMC policy for Safe Sanctuary rules at every Scout meeting, campout, trip, function, etc., so we need as many of our volunteers as possible to be Safe Sanctuary-certified.

If you are a current Safe Sanctuary volunteer, and you renew prior to October 31, you will not be required to submit references.

The process to renew is as follows:

  1. Read the Child/Youth Protection Policy, which can be found on the Safe Sanctuary page at kellerumc.org under Quick Links, Safe Sanctuary. If you are not able to access the policy, stop by the church office and request a copy.
  2. View the Safe Sanctuary Training Presentation. The presentation is a video available on the Safe Sanctuary page of the website.
  3. Print and sign the Authorization for Information/Criminal Background Report, the Participation Covenant Statement and the Compliance with Attendance Policy Form and return all three signed documents to the church office.
Forms can also be submitted to Kathy Warren at an upcoming Troop meeting. You can pay the $15 background check fee online by clicking the link on the Safe Sanctuary page of the website, or you can give a check to our troop Safe Sanctuary representative, Kathy Warren. If you have questions, you can email Kathy at warren0698@yahoo.com
