Assistant Scout Master Required Courses

For those who aspire to be ASMs, there are two required courses
  1. Scoutmaster Leader Specific (SLS)
  2. Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS).  Up to date schedule HERE
Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training opportunities available in the Longhorn Council.
  • Find one that works with your schedule HERE.
  • The training is now also available online at https://my.scouting.org/. It takes approximately 4 – 6 hours. Classroom training allows a more personal interaction and opportunities to ask questions.

IOLS is a weekend campout course that covers all of the Scout rank advancement requirements through 1st Class. Has is been awhile since you’ve identified your poisonous plants? Still not sure how to tie a Timber Hitch? What would you do for someone with heat stroke. The weekend is formatted as a campout and uses the Patrol Method so you’ll get to know some other wonderful Scouters.
  • IOLS courses in Longhorn Council are coming up soon!  We hope many more will jump in to the fun.  Check out more information HERE.

Activity-Based Training

Troop 1910 is blessed to have many trained instructors to lead our program activities. All of the activity-based certifications are time-limited, so now might be the time to take over and become 1910’s newest instructor or to recertify as a Range Safety Officer, Climbing Instructor, or Archery Instructor.

Longhorn Council provides a one-day training for NRA Range Safety Officers (RSO).

There are two types of Climbing Instructor certifications, one full climbing certification and one for tower climbing only. The full rock certification includes climbing and rappelling on natural rock formations like Hermit’s Cave at SR2 or climbing at Mineral Wells State Park. It also includes climbing at pre-rigged locations like the SR2 Tower, Worth Climbing Gardens, Tahuaya Tower, or the Basswood Activity Center. The tower certification is for pre-rigged locations only.

Please take advantage of these training resources to complete your training or provide 1910 with activity opportunities for future campouts.  The full range of training opportunities may be found HERE

And, if that's not enough -- know that your attendance is always welcome at WOODBADGE!
