Memorial Day 2023

NO TROOP MEETING MONDAY, MAY 29... WE WILL SEE ALL TROOP MEMBERS IN THEIR FULL FIELD UNIFORM AT THE FLAG RETIREMENT CEREMONY AT MT. GILEAD. INFO BELOW.

While many Americans will celebrate Memorial Day with hot dogs, hamburgers and a day off... let us not forget what this day is really all about. Memorial Day is not about 20% off sales and lounging by the pool. Memorial Day is a day of honor and respect for our fallen... and sometimes forgotten.

From the US Memorial Day website, Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. Over two dozen cities and towns claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it’s difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day.

Regardless of the exact date or location of its origins, one thing is clear – Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle. On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there.

I encourage all Troop 1910 families to engage in something meaningful this weekend to help instill in our youth a purpose for this day. Let's raise a generation that doesn't forget.

Take part in watching the National Memorial Day Parade. The parade is a made for tv event that will be aired at various times... the one in our region typically is shown on WFAA. This year they will be aired on June 4 at noon.  Check THIS LINK for the exact stations and times (they're not listed yet)

Additionally, here is a Memorial Day Tribute you could watch with your family.

I encourage ALL Troop members and their families to attend the Memorial Service at Mt. Gilead (1351 Bancroft Road). Scouts arrive by 10am. Be sure to bring some water and a chair... The service begins promptly at 11:00am CST at the Mt. Gilead Cemetery on Keller-Smithfield Road. This event is hosted by the Golden Triangle Rotary Club. This is a one-hour event inclusive of a flag retirement ceremony we will participate in.  Hot dogs and chips will be provided. Please see Mr. Cohen with any questions.

Aquatic School 2023

Aquatic School is a leadership program teaching Scouts and Venturers to be strong leaders, instructors of aquatics skills, and planners of unit aquatics activities.  It appears there is ONE SLOT LEFT!  After that it will likely go to a waiting list.

It is much more than simply a “lifeguard school” — rather, it’s a leadership and skills development program that gives your Scouts or Venturers the skills needed to make them better instructors and better leaders.

Aquatic School graduates are taught the fundamentals of Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat, the principles of teaching a non-swimmer, planning skills for Unit swims and float plans, as well as aquatic first aid and emergency procedures. Graduates also learn and hone public speaking and presentation skills, and 16 Scouting knots.

Established in 1954 with The Good Ships Blue Star and Barracuda, Aquatic School is the Longhorn Council’s oldest week-long leadership program for All Scouts ages 13-17We want your Scout to become part of this great tradition!

This unique, challenging, and rewarding course has been the training ground for over six decades of Longhorn Council instructors & leaders.

Scouts are empowered by the Four Goals of Aquatic School while participating in Swimming, Lifesaving, Rowing, Canoeing, Kayaking, and Public Speaking merit badges. The Four Goals are:

  1. Leadership Development
  2. Skill Proficiency
  3. Instructor Training, and
  4. Time Management.
Scouts not only learn these merit badges but become aquatic resources for our unit by learning how to teach these merit badges!

Scouts 15+ may earn BSA Lifeguard. CPR is not offered during Aquatic School. Scouts 15+ should come with a current CPR certification card to be signed complete for BSA lifeguard.

Cost is $375. Limited Camperships may be available, email chad.hay@scouting.org to request application.

All participants must pass a BSA swimmers test. For more information visit AquaticSchool.org

Aquatic School takes place July 9-15 at Worth Ranch. Click the button below to register.
