Troop Christmas Party & Chili Cook Off

 


Our troop Christmas Party and Chili Cook-off will be held December 11.

We've got the fun planned, but what we need now are COOKS!  We need some awesome cooks to bring in their favorite pot of chili -- Vegetarian, White Bean, Texas Red... you name it... to enter our contest (and help us feed 100 Scouts and Scouters!)

Be sure your serving spoons are CLEARLY LABELED and if you have toppings to add to your chili (shredded cheese, diced white onions, green onions, corn chips, etc. that those are containers and serving utensils are clearly marked as well).

This will also be the night of our annual slide show!

Scouts -- there's no better way to get those much-needed merit badges or to achieve rank advancement than to attend Summer Camp.

 The price this year is $750 for a whole week of fun (plus merit badge class fees and/or high adventure program costs) -- (Adults $530)


All misc forms, including medicine forms you'll need for monthly campouts or summer camping can always be found on our Troop's Forms Page which is HERE.

Permission form with $100 non-refundable deposit is DUE NOW.

$200 first payment for youth is DUE DECEMBER 1. 

Merit Badge Forms will be distributed April 1 and due April 22.

Veteran's Day 2023

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.



Today we pay homage and give thanks to all of those who have served this great nation of ours from the United States Navy to the United States Army to the United States Air Force to the United States Marine Corps to the United States Coast Guard and each branch of reserves.


Scouting has a history rich in military service as well.  Robert Baden-Powell, the father of Boy Scouts, was a British officer with a long military career.  Much he learned along the way in his military career directly correlated with how he established scouting.  As it stands, many of our current military academies are home to a considerable amount of Scouts - over 1/3 of the cadets at West Point were involved in scouts and 16% are eagles; over 20% of the Air Force cadets were in scouting and 12% are Eagles; and 25% of the Naval Academy midshipmen were in Scouts and 11% are Eagle Scouts.  Though it's not the only way, it's definitely a great path to being a part of something much bigger than yourself.
So, today, we humbly give thanks to those who have signed their name on the line and said, "Whatever it takes... I'm here for America."  Those are the kind of courageous men and women we honor today. Some interesting facts from History.com about veterans: The brave men and women who serve and protect the U.S. come from all walks of life; they are parents, children and grandparents. They are friends, neighbors and coworkers, and an important part of their communities. Here are some facts about the current veteran population of the United States.


There are approximately 21 million military veterans in the United States.
  • 16.1 million living veterans served during at least one war.
  • 5.2 million veterans served in peacetime.
  • 2 million veterans are women.
  • 7 million veterans served during the Vietnam War era (1964-1975).
  • 5.5 million veterans served during the Gulf War (representing service from Aug. 2, 1990, to present).
  • Of the 16 million Americans who served during World War II (1941-1945), about 620,000 are still alive.
  • 2 million veterans served during the Korean War (1950-1953).
  • 6 million veterans served in peacetime.
  • As of 2014, 2.9 million veterans received compensation for service-connected disabilities.
  • As of 2014, 3 states have more than 1 million veterans in among their population: California (1.8 million), Florida (1.6 million), Texas (1.7 million).
  • The VA health care system had 54 hospitals in 1930, since then it has expanded to include 171 medical centers; more than 350 outpatient, community, and outreach clinics; 126 nursing home care units; and 35 live-in care facilities for injured or disabled vets.


We remember your sacrifice. We honor your patriotism. To quote President Coolidge, "The Nation which forgets its defenders will be itself forgotten.”

University of Scouting - Register TODAY!

  


Although you can take training courses for just about every position in Scouting through the my.Scouting portal, nothing beats live, in-person training when it comes to Scouting.  The camaraderie, sharing of tribal knowledge and networking you garner when attending events in person just can't compare to clicking through yet another training module.  

Something you will hear many tenured leaders say is that "every Scout deserves a well-trained leader!"  THIS is how you become one of those well-trained leaders.

If you are new to Scouting, new in a particular Scouting volunteer position, or perhaps you want to step up to offer assistance in a supporting role, the University of Scouting will have courses offered for just about everything under the sun from the basics in Cub Scouts to becoming an Eagle mentor.




Saturday, November 18 is the Longhorn Council's University of Scouting. If you haven't registered, there is still time to pick your courses and make a day of it. Check out the Event Guide HERE

Registration ($30) is open now through November 17.

In-person courses are at Tarrant County College's Trinity River Campus in Fort Worth.

(While walk-in registrations are allowed at a higher price point please consider the logistical nightmare for your volunteers who are teaching... they're busy preparing materials, handouts and such.  The courtesy of an advance registration allows them to do their job and ensure enough materials are available for those in attendance. Pre-registration is just the kind thing to do.  A Scout is kind. Register in advance.  Thankyouverymuch.)

Participant Requirements:

If you are attending as a Scouts BSA youth, you must:

  • Be a registered member of a Scout Troop for a period of 6 months prior to the start of the course
  • Have earned your 1st Class Rank by the start of the course.
  • Be 13 years of age by the first day of the course and have not yet reached your 18th birthday by the last day of the course.
  • Have your Scoutmaster’s approval signature, questions initialed and your Parent/Guardian’s approval.
  • Be capable of functioning safely and being self-reliant in an outdoor environment
  • Have completed ILST (Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops)
  • Have parts A and B of the BSA Medical Form submitted with your application, and have part C submitted to the Course Director no less than 72 hours prior to the start of the course

Field of Honor - Veteran's Day Program

 


Troop 1910 will be hosting the flag retirement ceremony at the Field of Honor event in Keller on November 11th. The event will be at 7 pm. A reminder that this is the same weekend that the Troop is scheduled to camp, so if you aren't camping, your attendance is requested to serve.  This event is to honor our amazing Veterans.  Please touch base with Mr. Wiggins and Mr. Warren to volunteer.

$167 - for 2024 Youth Registration.

$72 - for 2023 Adult Registration

$25 - for 2023 Merit Badge Counselors 
(who are not already registered as volunteers)


Please note many of your scouts have money in their scout account. You can see how much is in your son’s Scout Account at scoutbook.com under the Payments Log. If you would like for us to use that money toward their dues, please let our Membership Chair know.

Make checks out to Troop 1910 or bring cash at the next Troop meeting. Additionally, the Treasurer  can send an invoice that can be paid through Paypal. We do not take credit cards.

Dues were collected at the 10/23, 10/30 and 11/6 Troop Meetings.  If you haven't turned it in, it is OVER DUE -- please get payments in now. 

Council wants all Recharters to be completed by 11/15. This means that all payments are due now so that it can be completed on time.

If you were not at the meetings, you are welcome to bring take your payment direct to Ms. Sampson  Her contact information is in Scoutbook.  

If you or your son are dual registered, please be sure to let her know what unit is the primary registration.  If you or your son are not Rechartering, please let me know (ssq1252@aol.com).

If your YPT expires in 2023 you must take it to have it updated and current with an expiration date in 2024. This must be completed by 11/6.

All adults rechartering MUST have a current YPT (that does not expire at anytime during 2024) or they will be not be included in the recharter, so bring a copy of your YPT cert to be sure.

Volunteers Needed

 



We aren't kidding when we say it takes a village to run a Troop our size SUCCESSFULLY and as attrition takes place, people move, leaders leave with their Eagles, we need to continually expand our volunteer resource base. 

Please don't think that you can't help... training is provided for any and every position. Investing in your son and his Unit can make all the difference in the world between a mediocre and a robust Troop.

We need Committee volunteers... specifically:

Outings Chair
This role is currently held by Mike Hunt. The outings chair is responsible for leading the logistical planning for all campouts except summer camp and high adventure. They book the sites and confirm reservations, book rifle/shotgun/archery ranges, keep an updated list of scouts and adults that is used to plug in our monthly campout spreadsheet, create and collect permission forms/money for every campout, collate the binder that we bring on every campout and so on. The time investment for this role is a couple of hours each week, with one week per month requiring added time.

Membership Chair
This role is currently held by Suzanne Sampson. This role is responsible for welcoming new scouts and adults in to the troop and processing all paperwork associated with joining, rechartering each year and overall having what they need from a joining standpoint. Suzanne has also been gracious enough to sell the neckerchiefs and patches needed when joining. This role is at each meeting throughout the year to process items as needed. This position has a heavier load this time of year with recharter and in the spring with crossover season.

Fundraising Chair
This role will be in charge of our fundraising activities throughout the year. Not to run every fundraiser, but orchestrate support for each fundraiser. We have several main fundraisers throughout the year: Spring/Fall Flowers, Camp Cards, Art in the Square and Popcorn.

Adult Training Coordinator
We are in need of someone that can access Scoutbook and provide reporting along with follow-up to make sure all adults have completed the necessary training for their positions.

Assistant Treasurer
Having two deep for different positions provides a lot of value for the troop now and in the future.

These are all very critical positions for our Troop’s success, so please reach out to our Committee Chair, Scott Carpenter to let him know you're ready to help us out!

Grub money ($15 per scout/$20 per adult) is due with your Permission Slip on Monday, November 6-- get it to your grubmaster so they can plan for you!

Food Drive at Monday's Troop Meeting


Please join us at our regularly scheduled troop meeting October 30 and support our local Keller UMC Resource Center by bringing in non-perishable food items.  The Resource Center distributes food to those in our community in need. They are in need of non-perishable foods for their food pantry. 

Also, feel free to dress up in your favorite Halloween costume should you desire.

Saturday, September 23 (8a-3p) will be an ILST (Introduction to Leadership Skills Training) at the Scout House and is intended for any Scout elected into a leadership position or interested in holding an elected/leadership position in Troop 1910 who has not taken it before.

ILST is required for the Senior Patrol Leader ("SPL") team, in addition to NYLT/Twin Arrows training.  $5 for lunch is due to Ms. Picciano
