December Campout - CANCELLATION - Virtual Opportunity

Due to the recent resurgence of COVID-19 Virus concerns, Troop Leadership has determined the unfortunate need to cancel next month's Wilderness Survival (WS) Campout, and temporarily return to online Virtual Troop Meetings through January 11, 2021.

As four Scouts had signed up for Wilderness Survival prior to this decision having been made, Mr. Kurt Van Speybroeck (who would've been the Merit Badge Counselor running the Wilderness Survival  Program at the December Campout) has offered to provide online instruction (in a format similar to our recent virtual Merit Badge College sessions), as described in his email copied in below.

Additionally, if your scout didn't sign up but had potentially considered this opportunity, this is now open to everyone.

The follow-on plan at this time is to have the in-person Wilderness Survival overnight exercise folded into the January Shooting Range Campout (January 22 - 24, 2021).

If your Scout is interested in this opportunity, please contact Mr. Ray Jackson via e-mail at your very earliest convenience, so he can open a Virtual Wilderness Survival Merit Badge Blue Card and advise Mr. Van Speybroeck of additional Scout Students for his WS Sessions.

In Person or Remote?

question-mark-2110767_1280.jpg | No Jitter

With Keller ISD allowing in-person school as of 8/26, we felt it an appropriate time to survey the Troop as to the parents' desire for Scouts and Scouters to potentially return to in-person meetings and camping as well.

So, if you would be so kind, please take the 2 question survey emailed to you this evening.

Obviously, any return to in-person activities requires our Charter Organization's approval, and we will of course abide by all BSA, State of Texas, and CDC requirements regardless. The Scouts' safety is always our highest priority.

We are well aware that many parents are choosing remote learning and many are choosing in-person or a hybrid of the two. That is the reason for the survey, so we can make an informed decision knowing the desires of our membership.

Thanks so much for your time in taking the survey,
Bob Morgan

Art Merit Badge Opportunity

As shared on Bryan on Scouting

Imagine getting free art lessons from the most accomplished illustrators from around the country.

Maybe you want to ask them questions about their techniques. Maybe you’re looking for tips for your next art project. Maybe you’re bored and just want to draw along with the pros. And maybe you’re even looking to jumpstart the Art merit badge.

May 25-29, we’re making all that happen. Each day at 2 p.m., hop onto go.boyslife.org/fblive for live-drawing demonstrations and Q&As with the incredible illustrators of Boys’ Life magazine. Every lesson will cover different art media and how to render awesome art using a variety of tools.

Kids of all ages are invited to join. Even Cub Scouts who aren’t yet earning merit badges can benefit from tuning in.

Come prepared to draw along with the pros. Or just watch to get inspired for your own drawings. Some days you’ll probably have everything you need to follow along. Other tutorials require specific tools you can order ahead of time.

What’s the schedule for Art-O-Ree?

Monday, May 25, at 2 p.m.:

The Boys’ Life team kicks off the week with a look at the Art merit badge requirements. And then things get really exciting when Joey Ellis joins live to demo computer-sketched art with Photoshop. He’ll also show how to sketch with pencil and paper.

Supplies to have on hand for the pencil sketch:

  • A few pieces of tracing paper or regular computer paper
  • A pencil
  • An eraser
  • A marker (or a permanent marker)

Tuesday, May 26, at 2 p.m. Eric Ottinger shows how to make a work of art with acrylics.

Supplies to have on hand:

  • Synthetic bristle brushes
  • A wax- and oil-free canvas
  • Water in a disposable or painting cup
  • Paper towels or clean junk rags
  • A workspace you can get messy (protect surfaces you want to avoid staining with paint)

Wednesday, May 27, at 2 p.m. Daryll Collins demonstrates a pencil-and-paper sketch and takes your questions live.

Supplies to have on hand:

  • A few pieces of tracing paper or regular computer paper
  • A colored pencil (Darryll likes a Prismacolor Col-Erase Erasable Colored Pencil – carmine red)

Thursday, May 28, at 2 p.m. Kevin Hurley is live for a watercolor demonstration. He’ll stick around to answer questions, too.

Supplies to have on hand:

  • Basic tray of watercolors
  • Set of watercolor brushes
  • Textured watercolor paper (140 lb. weight recommended)
  • Water in a disposable or painting cup
  • Paper towels or clean junk rags
  • A workspace you can get messy (protect surfaces you want to avoid staining with paint)

Friday, May 29, at 2 p.m. Mike Moran shows how to create art with pen and ink.

Supplies to have on hand:

  • A pen with plenty of ink (fountain, rollerball or felt-tipped)
  • A few pieces of heavyweight paper

Pen and ink,Watercolors,Pencil,Pastels,Oil paints,Tempera,Acrylics,CharcoalComputer drawing or painting

If you tune in all week and draw along with the experts, you may have four (or more) great pieces of art to show your merit badge counselor. This could help you complete a key, challenging requirement. Ultimately, only your merit badge counselor can give you the final sign-off. Either way, you’ll be working toward developing the skills you need to earn this badge.

And if you need a hard copy of the merit badge pamphlet, you can order it online here. If you’re looking for the Kindle Edition, you can find it here.

Add it to your calendar now

Set a reminder. Tell your troop. Share with your Scout and Scouter friends.

Sign Offs, Scoutmaster Conferences and Boards of Review

Please be aware that 5/25 is Memorial Day, so if Scouts are signed up for that date, ACTUAL sign offs will be conducted sometime that week based on ASM availability and coordination with the Scout's parent.

Adults and Scouts, this is your opportunity to sign up for Rank Advancement Sign Offs, Boards of Review ("BOR"), and/or Scoutmaster Conferences. Very few of you are taking advantage of this opportunity to continue advancing in Scouting – it is challenging, but there are still advancements that you can complete and get signed off virtually at this time!

NEW Scouts should all be working on completing their Scout ranks at this time, then Tenderfoot, as possible.

Also, Scouts and parents, please be aware that you must take a picture of your Scout’s Handbook for the rank in question (and Camping and Service Logs as needed) and email to the Assistant Scoutmaster (ASM) and BOR contact once assigned, to enable them to verify that Scoutbook is up to date.

Parents are more than welcome to add dates in Scoutbook.com that are missing – just don’t click Recorded/Approved (if you have that capacity.)

All responses are required by Sunday at noon in order to schedule on Sunday for Monday night’s meeting.

  1. Scouts Sign Up to participate in a Zoom video conference with an ASM, along with your parent, in order to get Rank Advancement sign-offs (Scout through Life Rank) or a Scoutmaster conference (up to First Class only)  Please see your e-mail for the link to the Sign Up Genius.
  2. Scouts Sign Up to participate in a Zoom video conference for Scoutmaster Conference for Star or Life Rank. Again, see your e-mail for that specific link.
  3. Scouts Sign up for Boards of Review (BOR): After your Scoutmaster Conference is signed off by an ASM, Scouts need to email Ms. Boyd at troop1910advancements@gmail.com to request a BOR, and she will then put you on the BOR list. BOR’s are first-come, first served, so you must wait your turn until you receive an email with your scheduled BOR Zoom meeting.
  4. ASM Sign Up to volunteer to conduct Zoom video conference with Scouts for Sign Offs or SM Conferences (Scout's parent must be present to conduct the conference). There's a separate link for this in your weekly e-mail.
  5. Adults Sign Up to volunteer to participate in Boards of Review with Scouts - you need prior experience participating on a Board of Review please. See email links for those.

Everyone should be mindful of the 2 deep leadership requirement for youth protection - there shall be no one-on-one contact with Scouts, including teleconference, email, video conference, etc., so the parent must be included in all cases. NO exceptions!

For ASM’s and Scouts for sign-offs - Current virtual direction from the BSA regarding rank requirements HERE.

One update is that the BSA has implemented temporary changes to allow Scouts to complete rank requirements by video conferencing through September 1, 2020. This deadline will be re-evaluated as needed.

Levels of Completion in Scoutbook

All advancement items go through a series of  "done" in Scoutbook.

Those are as follows:

Complete
Leader Approved/Recorded, and
Awarded

COMPLETE
This is the least important status for this Troop. Basically, this is there to allow a Scout or a Parent (which we have often) to mark an item as Complete pending Leader review and approval. This functionality is in Scoutbook to put more power in the Scout's hands as well as facilitate a digital transaction between Scout and Leader. Imagine a scenario in a small rural Troop where the counselor is in a different town. The Scout could mark something Complete, document with notes and video to his counselor, and the counselor could mark that requirement Approved without ever seeing the scout face to face. We don't do much of that in Troop 1910, therefore this really isn't an important status for us.

Note: Items marked Complete that are unapproved go on a "Needs Approval" report. If your Scout's name is on this report, he should see an ASM or Merit Badge Counselor and request approval of these items as nothing moves forward without approval.

LEADER APPROVED / RECORDED
This is the most important status for any Scout or Leader to be concerned with; it is the Scoutbook equivalent of getting an ASM or MBC sign-off in the handbook or on a blue card. To make sure this is as confusing as possible, you will see this in different places in Scoutbook as Leader Approved, Leader Approved/Recorded, or Approved/Recorded. The important word is "Approved". Rank or Merit Badges that are "Approved" will go on to be awarded at the next Court of Honor. Approval also happens for individual requirements within a rank or merit badge, or things like the Cyber Chip. Committee will ask you to get all Scoutbook rank advancement items approved before your Board of Review.

Parents/Scouts: Any ASM can approve Rank advancement items. Merit Badge Counselors can approve Merit Badge items, or an ASM or Committee can approve Merit Badge items with proof (signed off Blue Card). Please remember to ask for the Scoutbook signoff at the same time as the pen and ink signoff.

ASMs and Merit Badge Counselors: You are the ones responsible for approving advancement times, so look for "Approved" check box when entering items into Scoutbook.

AWARDED
This gets marked quarterly after each Court of Honor by the advancement coordinator in Committee or myself. It's only important due to the way the Troop orders new patches and reports advancement to Council. Most ASMs and Leaders (other than Committee) or Parents don't need to worry about this one.

Leaders: Please do NOT mark an item Awarded! This risks the item not getting captured for the next Court of Honor or getting reported to Council. We keep paper records to guard against this, just in case.

Hope this helps. Let me know if there are any questions! Thanks!
Nick Nazarko, Assistant Scoutmaster

Patrol Selection

Sr. Patrol Leader Emblem | Boy Scouts of America

From your SPL Team regarding Patrol Selection:

As is typical at Spring elections, the patrols are being reorganized in order to better distribute experienced scouts.

The link below will lead you to a poll that allows you to tell the SPL team which Scout(s) you would like to be in a patrol with.

The ASPL of patrols will be searching for those who have put each other down on the list so make sure to talk to those you wish to be with so that you have the highest chance of being put with them.

If you do not answer the poll by May 11, then you will be assigned in whatever patrol that he sees fit. The faster you sign up, the more likely you will be grouped with who you want.

Great Scout At Home Merit Badge Opportuniites

Adapted from Bryan on Scouting
In times of crisis, Scouts find a way to adapt.

We’re hearing from Scouts and leaders across the country who have found creative ways to keep on Scouting even while practicing social distancing (staying home and remaining at least 6 feet from others if you must go out).

Today we wanted to share another way Scouts BSA members can continue their Scouting journey during this period of isolation: by earning merit badges. Below, we have listed 58 merit badges that Scouts can complete from home. The merit badges on the list meet two main criteria:

  • They don’t involve visits to public places or companies.
  • Their requirements can be completed indoors or in an average-size yard.
  • That eliminates merit badges like Citizenship in the Nation, which includes a visit to a state or federal facility, or Backpacking, which requires three treks of at least 15 miles each.

You will find merit badges that require special materials, like Basketry and Pottery. If you don’t have the necessary supplies at home, move on to the next suggested merit badge.

SPLs have been putting together classes on Google Classroom. Be sure you're checking your email for those opportunities as well.

BSA Corona Response

I know that everyone has been flooded with e-mails from any and every business you've had contact with the last 20 years concerning how they're handling their own response to the corona virus. The BSA has a website dedicated to this. If you'd like to seek out the information, please click HERE

Cyber Chip

This seemed a very appropriate reminder since we will be online now more than ever in the days and weeks ahead. Today’s youth are spending more time than ever using digital media for education, research, socializing, and fun. To help families and volunteers keep youth safe while online, the Boy Scouts of America introduced the Cyber Chip.

The Cyber Chip is an internet safety protocol that Scouts must learn to earn and then renew annually.

In developing this exciting new tool, the BSA teamed up with content expert NetSmartz®, part of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children® and training expert for many law enforcement agencies. Netsmartz® has created a Scouting portal showcasing Cyber Chip resources, including grade-specific videos, for each level. Check it out here.

Topics include cyberbullying, cell phone use, texting, blogging, gaming, and identity theft.

You may print this Cyber Chip Certificate here to present to your ASM once you have completed this requirement for your original completion or recharge.

Requirements for Grades 6-8 are HERE.
Requirements for Grades 9-12 are HERE

Be sure to print THIS off while you're working on your Cyber Chip as a reminder of how it correlates directly with the Scout Oath and Law you have pledged to follow.

SCOUTS REMEMBER TWO DEEP LEADERSHIP APPLIES ON ALL E-MAIL WITH YOUR ASM'S AND MERIT BADGE COUNSELORS.

Virtual Scouting

Welcome to a new age in Scouting! With this crazy pandemic on our doorsteps, we have moved our Scouting to the internet in a chance to lessen the impact and "flatten the curve" (you haven't heard that phrase eleventy billion times in the last week have you?

This is something new to our leadership but I can assure you that they are working hard behind-the-scenes to ensure that the momentum and learning continues and that we keep scouting on!

If you think about it, Scouts are probably much more prepared for the virtual world than we are!  Guess you can teach an old dog new tricks!

Be sure you're watching our Facebook Page and your e-mail for the updates. You know, the account that's been flooded with COVID-19 protocol for any business you've transacted with since 1994. But, don't ignore the Scoutbook messages... those will help keep you plugged in.

General Reminders

SCOUT BARN: Any Scout needing access to the Scout Barn must be accompanied by two adult leaders

CYBER CHIP: Your Scout’s Cyber Chip must be renewed annually as per BSA requirements, and must be current for all Rank Advancements. See Scoutbook.com for requirements based on grade.

SAFE SANCTUARY: All parents are encouraged to become Safe Sanctuary certified ($15 fee) – this greatly helps us with campouts, Troop meetings and events, and Merit Badge Counseling, as required by our Charter (Keller UMC).

TROOP MEETING ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Scouts and Leaders announcements: When you get up in front of the Troop to speak, please state your name and position that you hold for the Troop, so all of our new Scouts can get to know you.

ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTERS (ASM's):  Please remember to sign off on Scouts’ achievements on Scoutbook.com when you sign off in their handbooks whenever possible. This can be difficult on campouts, but the Committee spends a large amount of time fixing Scoutbook.com and deciphering dates to get this done at a Scout’s Board of Review time.

Life Scouts working towards Eagle Projects or preparing for Eagle Board of Review, as per mustangadvancement@gmail.com, please make sure you are using the current Eagle workbook required found HERE  Save this document to your hard drive before entering any information or whatever that was input will not save.

As of 9/2/19 - Mustang District Advancement Chair, Theresa Chasteen states:

Eagle Project Approvals

  1. Are done twice a month. They are scheduled the first Sunday of each month and the third Thursday of each month.
  2. The scout must obtain all signatures except Council/District signature on his project proposal page E before emailing mustangadvancement@gmail.com to schedule a time to meet.
  3. A parent or another adult leader must accompany the scout to this meeting. If the scout is more than ten minutes late to the meeting or does not bring another adult we will need to re-schedule for another date.
  4. We are currently trying something new with the sign- up process and we will send the scout the link to sign-up once they have emailed us.
Eagle Boards of Review

  1. Once your scout has completed all requirements for the Eagle Rank including all service project paperwork, Eagle Application (January 2019 version only accepted), ambition statement and has obtained a signed scouting history report from your troop advancement coordinator. The scout will email 662advancements@bsamail.org. This is Mr. Wells at the council office. He will schedule a time to meet the scout and verify all his paperwork.
  2. Mr. Wells will give the scout instructions to email mustangadvancement@gmail.com to schedule their Eagle Board. This account is checked about once a week typically on the weekend. The scout must have met with Mr. Wells prior to emailing us to schedule a board.
  3. We will request paperwork be scanned and emailed to us. We send a detailed email to the scout on what we need them to send us.
  4. Once we review the paperwork, again this is done about once a week, we let the scout know if we need additional paperwork or we send them a notification as to when and where the board will be held.
  5. Boards of review are not scheduled until we have all the paperwork that we have requested.
  6. Boards of review are held the third Thursday of the month. Eagle Candidates are scheduled in order of receiving all documents we’ve requested. A scout cannot request which month they would like to have their board unless it is a later date. For example if they email me next week and request a September board, it will only happen in September if we still have slots open for September and they have all their paperwork in. However, if a scout sends me their paperwork this week and needs to request a board for November due to playing football, in band, theater, etc. chances are we will be able to accommodate their request.
